If O2 might be unavailable for the Electron Transport Chain:

In the presence of oxygen, Oxygen is converted normally into ATP present in mitochondria electron transport chain. While, in the absence of Oxygen, there is expansion of NADH and cell will completely lost of NAD. And, in the absence of NAD, no glycolysis will occur. And, during the process of fermentation, by utilizing the energy given by NADH, Pyruvate will be converted into other different molecule.
