Predict which solvent will have the greatest effect on the pKa of acetic acid: 1-butanol or 2-butanol. Please justify your answer.
2- butanol is a weaker acid than 1- butanol due to the electron releasing nature of alkyl groups. Hence when 1- butanol is added to acetic acid it will suppress the dissociation of acetic acid due to common ion effect affecting it's pH and hence pka values.
As well it will react easily with acetic acid to form butyl acetate ester.
Predict which solvent will have the greatest effect on the pKa of acetic acid: 1-butanol or...
3. If acetic acid is not added to the TLC solvent, what effect would you predict that this would have on the Rf of ibuprofen? Why? 4. What are the four characteristics on an inflammatory response?
If you have a weak acid such as acetic acid (pka=4.0) at which pH ranges would you expect it to be a good buffer?
Which acid is stronger, acetic acid (pKa = 4.75) or citric(II) acid (pKa = 4.74)? Why?
Predict which of the following compounds will have a lower boiling point than butanal. 2-methylbutane 1-butanol 2-butanone 02-butanol butanoic acid
(c) The pka of acetic acid is 4.7. If 10.0mL of 0.10M acetic acid is used, what volume of 0.10M sodium acetate must be used to achieve a buffer with a pH = 5? Use two decimal places in your answer. X mL 13.50
What is the product(s) of acetic acid + 1-butanol? Can you please draw the structure?
Calculate the volume (mL) of 3 methyl-1-butanol (0.809 g/mL) and glacial acetic acid (1.049 g/mL) by using the densities and moles. Please show your work. 3-methyl-1-butanol= 0.12 moles (molecular weight= 88.15 g/mol) & glacial acetic acid =0.24 moles (molecular weight=60.052 g/mol)
You will be using a mixture of 5:1:4 volume ratio of butanol, glacial acetic acid (pure acetic acid), and water in this lab. Assume that butanol is the same as water in terms of a pH calculation. The density of acetic acid is 1.05 g/ml. The molecular weight of acetic acid is 60.05 g/mol. The Ka of acetic acid HAc is 1.8*10^-5. You can make the assumption that [H+] = [Ac-] << [HAc] here. What is the pH of this...
Leveling Effect: “A” has pKa of 7, “B” has pKa of 38. Explain which is the best solvent: a) solvent with pKa of 2 b) solvent with pKa of 16 c) solvent with pKa of 50 A+ base B ——> conj. base A + B
Give a detailed mechanism for the reaction utilizing 1-butanol and acetic acid.
