In order to develop into cancer, a tumor suppressor gene must exhibit loss of function mutation. In the given case, APC gene is responsible for the cell-cell adhesion and contact inhibition which hinder carcinogenesis. Thus, in order to develop colon cancer, this gene must lose its function.
