For week 3s strategy safari, I have chosen a very successful company that differentiates itself from many competitors, which is Dunkin Donuts. Dunkin Donuts has found its way to keep its customer loyal and happy. Dunkin donuts is an American global donut company and coffeehouse, founded in 1950 in Quincy, MA. Since its opening, Dunkin has succeeded in this industry by becoming one of the largest coffee and donuts companies in the world alongside with similar companies such as Starbucks..

So, what is it? Why it’s the secret to their success? Isn’t coffee and donuts a simple/basic product or foods? YES, in fact they are. However, as state in the notes strategy is not much what you are, but most of it is what you do. There are three generic strategies that can create a competitive advantage for a company. These include differentiation strategy, the cost leadership strategy, and the focus strategy.

How can I relate this saying to DD? For example, I am a coffee and baked goods lover all-day-, every-day. However, this addition is an expense that comes out of my bank account. In regard to the generic strategic matrix, I find Dunkin donuts spot at the low-cost leadership quadrant along with McDonalds. Therefore, DD knows customers don’t view other brands as an affordable option that provides quality. Cost leadership and product differentiation are mutually exclusive. Therefore, a company could only choose one as their overall business strategy. DD knows most of its products are basic, not necceraly simple. My point is, other brands offer the same features that make them different, in a sense.
