Forensic psychology is the understanding of the human process which take place in the human body along with the legal process which are involved in the process of defining the civil and criminal law in the society.Forensic psychology is a psychology practice of applying the technical and cognitive knowledge for the understanding of the legal and administrative matters pertaining to the study purpose for the benefit of humans. It is verified by applying the psychological principles for the application in law for understanding and analyzing the situation. There are five subtopics which can be considered for the study of forensic psychology as follows namely like:

  • police and public safety psychology
  • legal psychology
  • psychology of crime in the society.
  • correctional psychology
  • victim psychology

Forensic psychology started in the 1970's. J McKeen Catell conducted a psychological test on a set of participants in Columbia University. She asked few questions about the change in the weather conditions. Later on there were brief studies which were conducted on the juvenile criminal cases in courts. Lewis Terman conducted experiments to analyze military psychology. These events gave rise to the origin of forensic psychology in the field of science. Loh in 181 identified the differences between law and psychology. American Board of Forensic Psychology started in 1978 as explained by Otto and Heilbrun in 2002. The historical events which mark the starting of the event of psychology to the establishment of psychology as a professional course is depicted below in the form of events with the dates of occurrence of events in the history era:

  • 1893-experiment conducted by JMcKleen Catell.
  • 1903-Stern in Germany started the process of testimony in psychology.
  • 1906-Publication of the psychological work by George Frederick Arnold.
  • 1908-Publication by Munsterberg about the different views on forensic psychology.
  • 1908-Presentation of psychology appellate in court.
  • 1913-Psychological facilities in the US correctional facility.
  • 1917-Psychologist William Marsten developed a polygraph for diagnosing different situations in forensic psychology.
  • 1918-Formation of New Jersey department of corrections.
  • 1922-Karl Marbe a psychology professor at University of Warburg became first psychologist to start a clinical testimony for a trail case.

These events mark the period of transition of forensic psychology to a professional speciality.
