This assignment is important because as a manager you should know the importance of managing employee stress and how express the effects of stress to senior administration. Companies may help reduce stressful demands by job sharing, sabbaticals, employee wellness programs, training intervention, etc.

In a meeting last week your supervisor stated that company performance is below expectations and he attributes it to several employees who are weak and have a poor work ethic. However, you have noticed that several of your subordinates are exhibiting signs of strain related to stress. Create a memo to your supervisor convincing him/her that the poor performance is not because your employees are weak and have poor work ethics. Remember, this memo is to your boss. To be persuasive, you will need to keep it to the point, avoid placing blame, using casual language, use facts and avoid emotional language (e.g., we will be better off), cite reputable sources, identify your purpose for writing the memo, be concise and clear. Use a memo template, 12-point font (either Arial or Times New Roman), and single space your memo. Include all of the points below:

  1. The signs of stress you have noticed (include an explanation of how you assessed the need for stress management intervention(s). How would you know if an employee was experiencing burnout from work and what would/should you do about it? Explain stress, stressor, and strain.
  1. How is stress is related to low productivity. How can hindrance stressors be reduced and why is it important to reduce hinderance stressors? Which of the role-related stress sources (e.g., role ambiguity, role conflict, role overload, work-life balance) do think has created the most strain in the employees and why.

Dear Lena,

Our Company, Axaz Ltd. is considered to be one of the most liberal and progressive employers in the world. Employees are given the autonomy and freedom to work, based on their instincts as well as perspectives. However, it has been observed that as the company is growing, the performance of the employees is deteriorating. Initially we thought that this was because of the lack in skill and competency of the employees. But my team and me studied the employee data and their behavior in detail. Workplace stress emerged to be the primary cause behind the inefficiency and lack in productivity of the employees. The stress level of employees at the workplace is increasing day by day. As the business is expanding and becoming more competitive, quality criteria of the work is getting higher and the employees have to work real hard to fulfill the deadlines. This is resulting in higher stress level of overall employees at the workplace. This increased stress is impacting the health and wellness of employees, thus affecting their overall performance. In our bid to make workplace more engaging and stress-free, the management must come up with policies and interventions to make the overall workplace stress free.

My team had conducted an engagement survey where 67% of the employees stated that they are facing high stress at the workplace. The team was also observing the timesheet of the employees and could gauge that absenteeism rate was quite high among the stressed employees. Moreover the stressed employees portrayed the following signs:

  • Fluctuating mood
  • Fatigue
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Social withdrawal
  • Loss of interest at work

Some of the primary reasons which emerged as the primary factors behind the stress level at the workplace are:

  • Performance pressure
  • More overtime rate due to increased work after company’s expansion
  • Work-life imbalance
  • Guilt of not giving enough time to families

It is high time that we should address the stress at the workplace as it is getting reflected in the performance of the employees and impacting the overall productivity of the company. Some of the ways and initiatives which can help the company, in solving the stress problem are:

  • Introduction of the benefit of Telecommuting so that the work life balance of the employees can be facilitated
  • Increase in maternal and paternal benefits and leaves so that the employees can enjoy the birth of their child in a better manner
  • Conduct workshops and counseling sessions to keep a check on the stress and depression level of the employees
  • Have a no-overtime policy
  • Introduction of workplace pet policy where the employees can bring in their pets to the workplace. It has been proved scientifically that pets help in combating stress and increasing the overall productivity and engagement of employees at the workplace
  • Having a gym and workout pod set up at the premises of the company. This will promote an active lifestyle of the employees and help them in managing their stress effectively
