SOCIOLOGICAL EFFECTS WHEN PEOPLE ARE MISTREATED AT WORKPLACE

According to Einarsen et al.(2011, p.15), "Bullying at work means harassing, offending, socially excluding someone, or negatively affecting someone's work tasks". it is a gradual process in which an individual is subjected ti indirect and subtle forms of psychological violence. The negative behaviors are repeated in a systematic way and over a prolonged period of time. An individual exposed to bullying behaviors may end up leaving the organization, and/or suffering severe psychological trauma.

In the word mistreatment, can include bullying, harassment, abuse, etc. All the companies must play an important role to make a safe working environment for its employees. Any hostile actions in workplace is illegal and toxicity must be removed. Harassment makes employee to feel uncomfortable or threatened. These can come from a co-worker, supervisor, boss, vendor or client. There are many types of harassment in the workplace. They are:

  1. Physical Harassment
  2. Personal Harassment
  3. Discriminatory Harassment
  4. Psychological Harassment
  5. Cyber Bullying
  6. Sexual Harassment
  7. Third Party Harassment

Workplace abuse or mistreatment can have a serious impact on job performance of workers. This can build up emotional trauma among employees. Emotional abuse in the workplace has become so pervasive that it is considered by many as the norm. Emotional abuse is perhaps the cruelest of all inhumane acts by superiors. Because of the fear of retrenchment, employees are willing to accept abusive treatment like harassment, criticism and public humiliation in return for holding on to their jobs. When the workplace becomes hostile, it opens the door to workplace trauma. This is a condition whereby employees' performance start to decline and is followed by an increase in absenteeism and turnover.
