Answer #1

If a foreign DNA is inserted into the DNA of bacterium, then it is called recombinant DNA, and such DNA containing bacteria are called recombinant bacteria.

Insertion of foreign gene into bacteria is carried out by transformation technique.

Generally the foreign gene is inserted into the bacterial plasmid DNA.

For which, both the foreign gene of our interest and bacterial plasmid are cut with the same restriction endonuclease.

Then by using ligase enzyme plasmid DNA and foreign gene of our interest are ligated. Thus, recombinant DNA molecule is formed.

Now this Recombinant DNA molecule is allowed to enter into bacteria of our interest. This process is called Transformation.

After Transformation is completed, the transformed bacteria or transormants or recombinant bacteria are selected by using antibiotic plates.

Successful transformants or recombinant bacteria do survive on antibiotic plates.

Thus, recombinant bacteria are made.
