Diagnoses of ADHD have increased from 1% in 1902, to about 15% of American children diagnosed today. What are some possible reasons for this increase? Is the disorder actually more common today? Do you believe that ADHD is a normal human variant and that our diagnoses are simply an intolerance of play?

Answer #1

Earlier people had enough scope for outdoor play, interacting with others and freedom with responsibility. When the developed nations became industrialized and the family structures started changing, nuclear families became prominent. The child neither had anyone to talk to nor anywhere to play. This separation from the routine started making people think that the children are becoming increasingly disciplined. Children became increasingly active and exhibited their childish ways of doing things. The fact is that the parents were becoming more intolerant and impatient due to their job. This made them discipline their children too much and force the children to stay at home because of the city environment. Even the smallest amount of play and naughtiness was considered as ADHD. If this has to change, children should be allowed to be children. They should be given enough time and space to play and interact with other children. Limiting them from these opportunities would only cost them their quality life and we can’t just brand them as ADHD.
