Referring to Development through the lifespan ,Berk, L. E. (2018) textbook, Is it medically ethical for fertility doctors, using donor eggs and sperm, to assist post-menopausal women in becoming pregnant? Explain why or why not.
though the book does not clearly mention its view on on whether its ethical or not, nbut presents us with the facts for us to come to our open conclusion.
Based on the life expectancy data, 1 in 3 mothers and 1 in 2 fathers having a baby after the age of 55 will die before the time their child enters college ( U.S. Census Bureau,2011b). The argument put forward is should these woman be able to give birth if they will not even be able to see their children grow into adults living them alone. this argument makes a lot of sense. Leaving a child liable is not ethical at all. but as life expectancy increases and the marriage age delaying into the middle thirties, it might be the only option for many who want to have a child.
the counter argument for this is it is their right to give birth, and that is a right we cannot take away from them, should we propagate all the cons of getting pregnant later in life, yes of course. is it unethical I still think it is in the grey area.
