Answer is: they prevent mutation.

Mutations can result in antibiotic resistance in bacteria.Resistant bacteria survive antibiotics treatment  and can increase in numbers by natural selection. Therefore linking antibiotics is a good strategy for overcoming antibiotic resistance by the bacteria.
