(1) Prepare a list of 5 examples of slang in your own language that might be misinterpreted or misunderstood during a business conversation with someone from another culture. (2) For each example of slang, list other words you might use to convey the same message so it would not be misinterpreted or misunderstood. (3) Then for each tell if the alternate words mean exactly the same as the original slang and (4) explain why the suggested replacement is better than the original.
1) The five examples of slang in my language that might be misinterpreted or misunderstood by person from another culture during a business conversation :
A) By the skin of my teeth :
B) couch potato
C) Crash abruptly
D) for real
E) the cold shoulder
.
The other words that would be used in place if the above slang words used in order to clear misunderstanding or misinterpretation may be :
1) Barely
2) lazy or uninterested
3) sleep immediately
4) seriously
5) Ignoring or avoiding
.
3)a) By the skin of my teeth literally does not have any meaning to the person from another culture and they might misunderstood this slang by denoting it as misleading phrase thus making communication difficult. However the word Barely matches perfectly the real meaning and intention of phrase.
b) couch potato might be considered as a way to insult somebody but it us just another word for being lazy.
C) By crashing some might misunderstood it with serious issue by interpreting it as breaking or falling, but it is just the slang used for falling asleep quickly.
D) Yes the word " for real " Completely matches the word seriously used to express astonishment or assuring practicality.
E) the cold shoulder might literally be misunderstood as word that has to do something with physical comfort, but it actually means ignoring.
.
4) The suggested replacement is better because the words used are simplifying the slang and are expressed in their original or literal meaning rather than covering them with fancy or complex referrals.
