Four grams of O2 gas (molecular weight 32 g/mol) is compressed from an initial state of Pi = 1.30×105Pa, Vi = 4.50 L to a final state of Pf = 1.10×105 Pa, Vf =1.9 L along a path that forms a straight line on a PV diagram.

(a) What is the final temperature?

(b) What is the work done on the gas?

Answer #1

(a) n = 4 / 32 = 0.125

using

PV = nRT

T = PV / nR

T = 110 * 1.9 / 0.125 * 8.3145

T = 201.1 K

-----------------------------------------------

(b) work done = area under the curve

area comprises of a triangle and a rectangle

Work = 1/2 * 2.6e-3 * 20000 + 1.1e5 * 2.6e-3

Work = 312 J

    a. Find the work done BY a gas as it expands and is taken from state I to state F along the path IABF indicated in the PV diagram below given that P; = 4 x 106 Pa, Pr= 1 x 106 Pa, V; = 2 m), and Vf= 10 m². First, scale the graph according to these values. b. How much work is done BY the gas if it is now compressed from state F to state I along...

    Write a program to determine the mass of oxygen gas (formula: O2, molecular weight = 32 grams per mole) in units of grams in a container. You may assume that the user will provide the volume of the container in units of gallons, the temperature in the container in degrees Celsius, and the pressure in the container in units of atmospheres. For your test case, you may assume that the user provides 1.25 gallons for the volume of the container,...
