1. The 1844 U.S. presidential election saw Democrat James Knox Polk defeat Whig Henry Clay in a tight contest that turned to foreign policy, with Polk supported Texas and Clay's annexation in opposition. James K. Polk, the Democratic candidate, ran on a platform promoting American territorial expansionism, an ideology soon to be deemed Manifest Destiny. The Democrats called for Texas to be annexed at their convention and argued that the United States had a "simple and unquestionable" right to Oregon's "whole"
By linking the Oregon boundary dispute informally to the more contentious Texas issue, the Democrats appealed to both Northern expansionists (who were more insistent about the Oregon boundary) and Southern expansionists (who were more intent on annexing Texas as a slave state). Polk went on to win a slim victory over Whig's candidate Henry Clay, partially because Clay had taken a stand against expansion, though economic issues were still very significant.
2. The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) was the first military conflict in the United States, which occurred primarily on foreign soil. It pitted a politically fractured and militarily inexperienced Mexico against the US administration's expansionist-minded strategy. President James K. Polk, who claimed the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand into the Pacific Ocean across the globe. A border skirmish along the Rio Grande started the battle and was accompanied by a series of victories from the United States. When the dust settled, Mexico lost about a third of its territory, including almost all of California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico today.
3. You have to get involved as a company owner. Taylor's military experience inspired this philosophy but he was not guided as President through experience and those instincts. He had to lead both the Whig party and the nation. It was clearly a crucial moment in American history with just 10 years away from a brutal battle. Nevertheless, in a period when politics was largely dominated by patronage, Taylor refused to understand this idea and it was one of the factors leading to the Whig Party's collapse in just four more years. A ideology that seeks to be above the fray simply doesn't always succeed. You will be a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a Senior Executive, a Board of Directors Though he was part of the Cabinet, Taylor had not brought Fillmore into any debate regarding important legislation. A crucial weakness was this lack of communication with Fillmore, if not counseling, at least speaking out his feelings and letting him know how he was feeling about issues. This was most critical about the most crucial piece of legislation at the time, the 1850 Compromise, which was intended to allow California to join the US as a free state, established territorial status for New Mexico and Utah; this in return for improving the laws on fugitive slaves and protecting the privileges of slave ownership.
Winfield Scott was considered one of the greatest military leaders in U.S. history and played a significant role in the Mexican American War. Assigned the task of capturing the Mexican capital, Mexico City, Scott led a successful invasion that began with an amphibious assault on the coastal town of Vera Cruz (involving both army and naval forces). He marched triumphantly into Mexico City in September 1848, following a series of bloody fights that revealed Scott's ability in both organizing battles and inspiring troops. Perhaps this was the highlight of a long career that spanned much of America's major events and conflicts of the 19th century.
