(a) At 20.0 ˚C the vapour pressures of pure chloroform (C) and carbon tetrachloride (CT) are 170 and 87 Torr, respectively, and their liquid mixtures can be assumed to behave ideally. Calculate the total pressure and the vapour composition of three liquid mixtures containing 20, 40 and 60 mol% chloroform.

(b) Draw a reasonably accurate (i.e. to scale) P-X diagram for this mixture at 20 ˚C using the values from above.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) among the many cancer-causing chlorinated organic compounds. What are the partial pressures of these substances in the vapor above a mixture containing 1.80 mol of CH2Cl2 and 1.05 mol of CCl4 at 23.5°C? The vapor pressures of pure CH2Cl2 and CCl4 at 23.5°C are 352 torr and 118 torr, respectively. (Assume ideal behavior.)
