Photosynthesis occurs in two phases

1. Light phase: Light energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH (assimilatory power). H2O is splitted into oxygen. It occurs in the presence of light only. It occurs in the grana of chloroplast.

18ADP+ + 12NADP+ + 6H20 ---(light)-------------- 18 ATP + 12 NADPH + 6O2

2. Dark reaction or Calvin cycle: By using assimilatory power, CO2 is reduced to glucose. It doesn't depend on light directly but it depends on assimilatory power. It occurs in stroma of chloroplast.

6CO2+ 18 ATP + 12 NADPH --------------C6H12O6 + 18ADP+ + 12NADP+

Consolidated reaction of photosynthesis:

6CO2 + 6 H2O -----------------------------C6H12O6 + 6O2
