The most common is to support or refute a hypothesis before criminal or civil courts. Criminal cases involve the alleged breaking of laws that are defined by legislation and that are enforced by the police and prosecuted by the state, such as murder, theft and assault against the person. Civil cases on the other hand deal with protecting the rights and property of individuals. The use of mobile phones/devices in crime was widely recognized for some years, but the forensic study of mobile devices is a relatively new field, dating from the early 2000's and late 1990's. A proliferation of phones and other digital devices on the consumer market caused a demand for forensic examination of the devices, which could not be met by existing computer forensics techniques.
