You have a population of horses that have the wild type genotype for fur color, tan. However, when you look at the expressed phenotype, only 326 horses out of 500 are tan. What is this phenomena called? What is the value for this phenomena in this population of horses?

Answer #1

Answer: Penetrance
Explanation:
The phenotype of an individual is determined by both its genotype and environment.
Penetrance refers to the extent a given phenotype is expressed in a group of individuals carrying the given genotype.
If all the individuals exhibit the phenotype with respect to the genotype, the allele is said to be completely penetrant.
If all the individuals do not exhibit the phenotype with respect to the genotype, the allele is said to be incompletely penetrant.

In the given case,
Number individuals with genotype = 500
Number individuals expressing the phenotype = 326
Penetrance = (326/500) X 100
= 65.2%

    Please show WORK! In one species of rabbits, fur color is (hypothetically) controlled by a single gene, with dark fur being dominant to light fur. You study a wild population of these rabbits, and determine that 84% have dark fur. 1. If the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equillibrium, what would be the percentages of each genotype? (Homozygous dominant, Heterozygous, and Homozygous recessive) 2. The following spring, you examine 500 newly born babies, and observe that 390 of these have dark...

    Problem ***. Gray squirrels normally have a medium gray fur color. However, some squirrels have been observed with a very dark gray phenotype. Fur color is controlled at a single locus, with the allele for medium gray being completely dominate to the dark gray allele. Researchers studied a population of 1839 gray squirrels in Eastern Pennsylvania and observed that dark gray squirrels had a higher fecundity and fitness. Dark gray squirrels produced about 8 offspring on average with an expected...

    On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. In fact, if you are a pencil bear and a great surfer, you must have silky fur. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values...

    Wild populations of mice typically have gray-brown (agouti) fur and some laboratory strains have yellow fur. A single yellow male mated to several wild type (agouti) females. Altogether, the mating produced 40 progeny, 22 with agouti fur and 18 with yellow fur. The agouti F1 mice were intercrossed with each other and produced all agouti mice in the F2. Similarly, the yellow F1 animals were intercrossed with each other, but their F2 progeny segregated into two classes: 30 were agouti...

    Please show work. Thank you. 12. A small portion of deer have a trait called leucism, which is white coat. The frequency of the leucitic phenotype is 0.00005 (or 1/20,000). Leucism is recessive to wild type color. Assuming that the deer population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium fr A. Estimate the frequencies of the recessive leucistic allele (I) and the dominant wild type allele (L) B. Estimate the frequency of deer with heterozygous genotype C. For the calculations above, you assume...

    In horses, the basic color of the coat is governed by the E locus. EE and Ee horses can make black pigment, while ee horses are a reddish chestnut. A different locus, the R locus, can cause roan, a scattering of white hairs throughout the basic coat color. However, the roan allele has a serious drawback: RR embryos always die during fetal development. Rr embryos survive and are roan, while rr horses survive and are not roan. The E locus...

    A population of flour beetles has 1000 individuals. Normally the beetles are red in color; however, this population has a utation in the gene for body color that results in black beetles that are designated by the rr genotype. Red body color is dominant to black so the genotypes RR and Rr result in red beetles. Assume the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with a 50% frequency of each allele for body color.
