A block is pushed horizontally three times along a bench with varying forces. The following observations were made: 1) Force of 2.0N - Block does not move and high resistance in push   2) Force of 2.5N - Block does not move but less resistance   3) Force of 2.75N - Block moves with little to no resistance. What is the Friction force exerted by the bench on block to one decimal place?

Answer #1

When Force of 2.0 N is applied block does not move and high resistance in push because the applied force is less than the maximum static friction force .

hence in this situation force of friction is equal to the applied force.

hence, Friction force exerted by the bench on block = applied force = 2.0 N

similarly, when Force of 2.5 N is applied block does not move and less resistance in push because the applied force is less than the maximum static friction force .

hence also in this situation force of friction is equal to the applied force.

hence, Friction force exerted by the bench on block = applied force = 2.5 N

When Force of 2.7 N is applied block moves with little to no resistance because now the applied force exceeds the maximum limiting friction.

now, the friction force = μsmg (very less in magnitude because now there is almost zero resistance)

hence, friction force = zero (approx)

Consider the following three cases 1. The finger is pushing but not hard enough. Neither block moves 2. The finger is pushing hard enough that the two blocks are speeding up 3. The blodies have sped up, and are now moving at a constant speed. The finger still has to push to keep them going at a constant velodty. In all cases where the blocks are moving, they are moving together. (Block is not sliding on block A.) Block A...

    2. 2/10 points Previous Answers SerPSE10 5.AE.011. My Notes Experimental Determination of H's and The following is a simple method of measuring coefficients of friction. Suppose a block is placed on a rough surface inclined relative to the horizontal as shown in the figure. The incline angle is increased until the block starts to move. Show that you can obtain H by measuring the critical angle e, at which this slipping just occurs. The external forces exerted on a block...
