Define three major forms of primate locomotion. Name at least one species associated with each.
Primate locomotion can be classified on behavioural grounds into four major types:
1. vertical clinging and leaping is primarily a function of the hind limbs, example orangutans
2. quadrupedalism involves both forelimbs and hind limbs, of course, although not to an equal extent. For example African apes
3. brachiation mainly performed by the forelimbs. Brachiation is a specialized form of arboreal locomotion in which movement is accomplished by swinging from one hold to another by the arms. For example, gibbons use brachiation locomotion movements.
4. and bipedalism mainly hind limbs- humans
The differences between the four major categories lie principally in the degree to which the forelimbs and hind limbs are used to climb, swing, jump, and run.
