Place theory predicts that each location in the basilar membrane has caracteristic frequency, and the brain detects the pitch by distinguisidis between the signals received from different places in basilar membrane. This theory predicts how we are able to distinguish above 5khz sound waves.

Frequency theory suggests that the sound is differentiated based on the rate at which the auditory nerves fire as the membrane vibrates due to the sound. This theory is valid only upto 5kHz as it has been proved that, the maximum rate of firing is 5khz.

For a complete frequency analysis we need both the theories as each theory is restricted to a particular range of frequency domain, and both theories are required to explain the complete analysis.
