If a group is involved then the negotiation process becomes rather challenging. A group has its own structure & goals. Individual members will typically have differing personal opinions & objectives. The negotiators challenge is to recognize the leaders & the protagonists in the group. Each will have to be dealt with to reach an agreement which will stand the test of time.
The best method to find the decision makers (leaders) within an opposing group is to talk over different facets of the circumstance. Listening to every member's dialogue, matter and, equally essential, to whom they address their statements (not verbally). Try to find glances or a change in their sitting posture as a signal that they’re watching how someone of their own group is reacting to their statements. This differential pattern will disclose where they stand in their team.
Group negotiations become most challenging if there are opposing viewpoints & power factions within a group. Being an outsider & the “opposition” it aids to track down such discord in order to decide if the group can attain an accord or if you’re wasting your time.
When you run a divided opposing group dynamics you may be able to divide & surmount. But such kind of power tactics have their restrictions:
• Pushing the main negotiator to make an assurance contrary to the rest of her group may be successful in the course of the meeting but fail as soon as the meeting concludes and her co-workers speak up in private.
• Pressing hastily may cause the other group to postpone making any decision till they can agree amongst themselves thus costing you the advantage of their fractionalization.
The best advice whilst encountering a dysfunctional group of negotiators is to go gradually, enhance your awareness of non-verbal signs and verbal pitches, & pace yourself not to be caught up by the varied & implied affronts often utilized in group negotiations, and keep the discussion focused on where you want it to go. Don’t let it become diverted or fragmented by allowing all on the other side to disrupt the process by speaking simply to be heard.
Effective negotiators must also be effective leaders. Controlling the matter of the meet & the direction of the dialogue comes from the skilful application of informal leadership competencies. Sharpen these competencies and you’ll enhance your negotiating outcomes.

Look for mutual gain The third major block to creative problem-solving lies in the assumption of a fixed pie: the less for you, the more for me. Rarely if ever is this assumption true. First of all, both sides can always be worse off than they are now. Chess looks like a zero-sum game; if one loses, the other wins — until a dog trots by and knocks over the table, spills the beer, and leaves you both worse off...
