Acute infectious Gastrointestinal disorders:

Alterations in health (Diagnosis):

Risk for infection related to diarrhea as evidenced by increased frequency of stools.

Pathophysiology related to client problem:

The bacterial infection causes inflammation, malabsorption, and irritation of the bowel. Thus increases the peristaltic movement and results in diarrhea.

Health promotion and disease prevention:

Provide a full liquid diet and avoid food that increases the bowel movements.

Assessment:

Risk factors:

  • Gender
  • smoking
  • History of IBS
  • caffeine
  • High fiber food

Expected findings:

  • Free from nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Decreased peristaltic movement.
  • Normal bowel pattern
  • Tolerate of solid foods.

Laboratory tests:

  • Stool analysis
  • A stool culture to identify the organism
  • Bile pigments and bile salts level.

Diagnostic procedures:

  • Colonoscopy to visualize the large intestine
  • CT scan to view the abdominal structures.

Safety Considerations:

  • Avoid fiber-rich food.
  • Include more amount of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Provide more amounts of vitamins.

Patient-centered care

Nursing care:

  • assess the level of fluid and electrolyte levels.
  • Monitor patient's daily weight.
  • Assess the bowel sounds and the color, consistency of stools.
  • assess the signs and symptoms of bowel movement.

Therapeutic procedure:

  • IV therapy to maintain fluid status.
  • Administer medications.

Medication:

Antiemetics and antidiarrheal agents.

Antibiotics to treat infections.

Client education:

  • Educate about hygenic measures.
  • Educate to avoid sharing utensils.
  • Avoid intake of undercooked foods.
  • Follow hand washing before meals.

Interprofessional care:

  • Dietician helps with the new diet regimen.
  • Infection control nurse prevents the spread of diseases.
  • The physician to follow up with care.

Complications:

  • toxemia
  • septicemia
