The compound 3-methyl-1-butanethiol, (CH3)2CHCH2CH

The compound 3-methyl-1-butanethiol, (CH3)2CHCH2CH2SH, is found in the defensive secretion, or \"spray,\" of striped skunks. Draw the skeletal structure. Hint!!!! This compound has a chain containing four carbon atoms, with a methyl (?CH3) group bonded to the third carbon atom and a thiol (?SH) group bonded to the first carbon atom.

Answer #1
Concepts and reason

A compound condensed formula is given which needs to be converted into the skeletal structure of the compound. Skeletal formula and condensed formula are inconvertible into one another.

Fundamentals

• Condensed formula is simple way of writing the structure by eliminating the bonds between them to make compact. Consider the following example:

Condensed formula for the compound ethanol is written as, CH3CH2OH{\rm{C}}{{\rm{H}}_{\rm{3}}}{\rm{C}}{{\rm{H}}_{\rm{2}}}{\rm{OH}} .

• Skeletal formula of compound is shown by bonds. Atoms other than carbon and H are written by using their symbols. It is helpful in determining the type of bonds present in the structure. Consider the following example:

Skeletal formula for the compound ethanol is written as follows:

ОН
Ethanol

Draw the structure formula for the compound from the condensed molecular formula as shown below:

CH3
conversion
HC,
(CH3),CHCH_CH_SH
3-methylbutanethiol
Hс-

Draw the complete skeletal structure of the given compound as shown below:

SH
3-methylbutanethiol

Ans:

Hence, the skeletal structure of the compound from given condensed formula is shown as follows:

SH
3-methylbutanethiol

Week 10- Constitutional isomers Constitutional isomers have the same molecular formula, but their atoms are bonded in different orders. These may be further distinguished as chain isomers, which differ only in hydrocarbon chain structure, positional isomers, which differ in the location of a functional group, and functional group isomers which differ in the nature of their functional groups. Typically chain and position isomers show only modest differences in their physical and chemical properties, while functional group isomers differ greatly from...

    A. Enantiomers: Certain substances have the unique property of rotating the plane of plane-polarized light. Such light rotation is detectable with the aid of a polarimeter. In order for a molecule to be optically active it must be chiral. Chiral objects lack a plane of symmetry and are non-superimposable on their mirror images. A sp?- hybridized carbon atom can fulfill these requirements if all four of its substituents are different. 1. Methane a) Prepare a methane molecule and then substitute...
