Question

Homework (Due Thursday, January 31, 12:30pm.) Required (hand in) 1. In the table below you see unlabeled force diagams for balls in different situations: Match the diagrams with the following descriptions (1) A ball is moving upward after it leaves your hand (2) You hold a ball in your hand. (3) A ball is falling down (4) You are throwing a ball (still in your hand) straight up. (5) You are lifting a bowling ball at a constant rate. For EACH description: a. redraw the chosen force diagram you associated with that description and label the forces appropriately. b. Explain your choice - why is the force diagram you chose consistent with the description? Rubrie Item Criteria for adequate performance Student explains using appropriate physics ideas. Explanation is clear, sufficiently detailed, easy to follow, and shows understanding Clarity (F3) Is able to draw a force diagram (6)Forces are corectly labeled with two subseripts that identify the interacting objects. Arrows are correct lengths and directions Represeatational consistency (A5) The motion and force diagrams are consistsernt Student is able to explain in words how (s)he checked that each representation is consistent with the other
2. Biologists observe rapid speciation (formation of new species) of fish in Lake Malawi. Fish of different species are observed to be identical in shape and size but appear only to be distinguishable by slight variations in the color of their markings. In order for speciation to occur, females have to be able to select mates from the same species and closely related species to prevent interbreeding. But how can they single out the correct malers avoid those from other to mate with when the different species are so similar in appearance? The biologists want to investigate two possible explanations: 1、The fernale fish are using visual cues based on of the markings on the males to select a mate. However they also want to considet possible explanation, 2. Female fish are using olfactory (scent/smell) cues from pheromones (traveling through the water) secreted by the male fish to select the correct species mate. Describe a testing experiment or experiments you potentially disproving one of them. Here are some basic parameters: a. You have a tank where you can put in different sorts of partitions (you can choose the sort of partition you want to use). The general idea is that you put the female into the middle Male compartment and males into the left and right compartments. The female will swim and spend a lot of time closer to the male she wants to mate with. So if she moves to the left, shes interested in the left-hand fish and if she ーーーーーーーーーー ー moves to the right shes interested in the right- hand fish. b. You have a supply of female fish who are ready to mate (called gravid females). c. You have a supply of male fish from the same species as the females and another supply of male fish from a different but closely related species d. You can illuminate the compartments with monochromatic (single color) light to make the the color could conduct that would test these two ideas, Female Male Fish Tank males markings appear uniformly grey to the female Rubric Item Clarity Criteria for adequate performance Experiment is clearly described (with words and pictures) seo that someone else reading the description is able to reconstruct how the experiment would be conducted and Is able to design a reliable experiment The experiment tests the hypotheses and has a high likelihood that tests the hypothesis (C2)of producing data that will lead to a conclusive judgment Is able to make a reasonable prediction based on a hypothesis (03) | distinct from the hypothesis, c) accurately describes the A prediction is made that a) follows from hypothesis, b) is expected outcome of the designed experiment,d) incorporates relevant assumptions if needed

Required (hand in) 1. By using a 2-meter stick (like the one in lab) marked in millimeters and a stopwatch that measures to 1/100h of a second, you decide to measure the speed of a motorized toy car that travels at a constant velocity. You measure out a 162.0cm interval with the 2-meter stick and time how long it takes the car to travel that distance using the stopwatch. Repeating the experiment 5 times you get the following time data:...

According to Robert Trivers, why are men generally larger and more physically aggressive than women? Because women are more reproductively “valuable” than men, hence competition for mates is fiercer among men Because men invest more heavily in reproduction than women Because men secrete more testosterone Trivers’ theory does not speculate on the origin of the sex difference in size and physical aggression Although some women are interested in casual sex (short-term mating), research has suggested that there are differences in...

HULPU To recieve full credit you must show all work #1. To determine whether the pipe welds in a nuclear power plant meet specifications a random sample of welds is selected, and tests conducted on each. Weld strength is measured as the force required to break the weld. Suppose the specifications state that mean strength of welds should exceed 100lb/in the inspection team decides to test H = 100 versus H: > 100. Why is this better than H: <...

need help with this .. From the pages 571-587 attached below. 1a) Suppose a population of guppies was infected with a parasite. In that population a mutation results in a parasite resistant genotype that spreads through the population through natural selection. A subsequent mutation in the parasite results in a genotype that is unaffected by the newly evolved resistant guppy genotype. What is the name of the hypothesis that explains this host parasite “arms race”.? 1b) What is this name...
