With the battery connected, a dielectric is then inserted between the plates. Does the energy stored by the capacitor increase, decrease or remain the same when the dielectric is inserted?

Capacitance of capacitor increases when dielectric increase hence more charge can be stored with same potential difference and hence energy will increase as energy E =1/2× q×V.
