How does the addition of aqueous NH3 to a solution separate and identify Cu2+ and Bi3+ ions? Why the addition of a strong base, such as KOH, work just as well as the addition or aqueous NH3?

they can be separated on the basis of color of the precipitate formed.

If KOH is used Bismuth will form white precipitate of Bismuth hydroxide but with copper ion it forms light blue precipitate of copper hydroxide which is same as other copper salts. Hence KOH can't be used.
