It is necessary to have a data communication network model to ensure the effectiveness of the communication-
The effectiveness of a data communication system depends on three characteristics.
1. Delivery: The system must deliver data to the correct destination.
2. Accuracy: The system must deliver data accurately.
3. Timeliness: The system must deliver data in a timely manner.
Data communications refers to the transmission of this digital data between two or more computers and a computer network or data network is a telecommunications network that allows computers to exchange data

There are several layers designed logically to govern the Data communication. This model is defined by OSI layered architecture-
OSI (Open System Interconnection) model depicts that how applications can communicate over a network.

1. Physical layer – Responsible for transmitting individual bits from one node to the
next.
2. Data link layer – Responsible for transmitting frames from one node to the next.
3. Network layer – Responsible for the delivery of packets from the original source
to the final destination.
4. Transport layer – Responsible for delivery of a message from one process to
another.
5. Session layer – To establish, manage and terminate sessions.

6. Presentation layer – Responsible to translate, encrypt and compress data.
7. Application layer – Responsible for providing services to the user. To allow
access to network resources.
