How do you calculate the net charge of a molecule? For example what would the net charge of this molecule in the stomach at a ph of 1.8 be? The answer is +1 but why? I understand that the asp molecule is negatively charged so why is the answer +1?

I am referencing to

Asp and gluare negatively charges and
Cys and tyr neutral

Asp is the symbol for Aspartic acid.

Its structure is as shown.

The ionisation of -COOH group gives carboxylate ion and amino group is protonated to form ammonium ion.

Total net charge is -1. Hence, it is a negatively charged amino acid.

When pH is raised to 1.8, the carboxylate ions are protonated. This is because, pH 1.8 corresponds to highly acidic medium.
