Energy expenditure can be defined as the amount of energy that a person requires to carry out physical activities such as breathing, blood circulation, digesting food, or simply exercising. In the U.S., biological energy is expressed in the unit Calorie or kilocalorie and one Calorie can be defined as the energy required to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius. The energy expenditure of an individual in a day is an estimate of the number of calories an individual burns throughout the day. To lose weight, the body must expend more calories than what it consumes each day. This enables the individual to create a daily caloric deficit which results in weight loss over time.
