Given equations are :

a). C (diamond) + O2 (g) --------------> CO2 (g) , ΔH1 = - 395.4 KJ

b). CO (g) + 1/2 O2 (g) ------------------> CO2 (g) , ΔH2 = - 283.0 KJ

c). C (graphite) + CO2 (g) --------------> 2 CO (g) , ΔH3 = + 172.5 KJ

The aim equation is : C (diamond) --------------> C (graphite) , ΔH = ?

Multiply the equation (b) by 2 and then add to equation (c) . Now, Subtract them in equation (a) to get the aim equation as :

Equation (a) - [ 2 x Equation (b) + Equation (c) ] , Because, ΔH is the additive property of the system therefore use the same conditions on ΔH to obtain the ΔH of aim equation as :

ΔH = ΔH1 - [ 2 x ΔH2 + ΔH3 ]  

ΔH = - 395.4 KJ - [ 2 x (- 283.0 KJ) + 172.5 KJ ]

ΔH = - 395.4 KJ - [ - 566 KJ + 172.5 KJ ]

ΔH = - 395.4 KJ + 393.5 KJ

ΔH = - 1.9 KJ

Therefore, ΔH of the aim equation =  -1.9 KJ
