Answer #1

Chemical mutagenicity (use of certain mutagenic substances like EMS or MMS or other potent mutagens which can alter the DNA sequence in an organism) in an organism can be investigated by several methods.

- Wing spot test using Drosophila as a model organism (in vivo model); phenotypic mutations can be seen by this method

- Comet assay (also known as single cell gel electrophoresis) for measurement of single strand break and double strand break (2 types, alkaline and neutral assay)

- Ames test in microbes

- Analysis of chromosomal aberration in organisms: addition, deletion, translocation and inversion etc.

We can use these alternative methods for the mutagenicity assessment using plant or animal models.
