1. By definition guidance aims to clarify so that an individual can take an informed decision. For example, vocational guidance is offered to students so that there is smooth transition from student life to work life.
Discipline is being strict with adherence to timings and involves planning as an important pre requisite. It may be followed by rewards or punishment.
Punishment aims to reduce chances of engaging in a behaviour. It is done two ways- positive punishment where aversive stimulus is used and negative punishment where favourable stimuli is withdrawn as a consequence for engaging in wrong behaviour.
The difference between the three:
1. Guidance is by expert counsellor or trained personnel, disipline and punishment methods are used by teachers and parents alike.
2. Guidance tries for giving an objective picture so that child chooses for himself. In discipline it can be self imposed or thrusted by school or family setting in either case choice is limited. And in case of punsihment choice is strictly less due to enforced nature of harsh measures.
3. Guidance ensure self-expression and personal growth whereas discipline produces uniformity and punishment produces adherence.
They are similar to extent that they are all attempts to influence ones behaviour by either giving information, targets or based on consequences.
How does guidance, discipline, and punishment differ from one another?
