- Asch conducted one of the
mostpopular experiments when it comes to 'Conformity' in
Psychology. It was to determing the extent to which the peer
pressure affects the choices and the decisions that we make. Asch
devised a 'line judgment task' activity where there was an
obviously wrong answer. If the participant selected the 'obviously
wrong' answer then it would be due to group conformity or group
pressure. The activity was disguised as a 'vision' test. A
participant was to be placed in a room with seven stooges or fake
participants. The fake participants would agree in advance what the
wrong answer would be and would proceed to give the wrong answer
before the participant gets the chance to answer. The real
participant believes that the other participants are also
participating in the 'vision' task and conforms with
them.
- Significant amount of conformity was observed in giving obviously wrong answers to the perception of length of the lines. About 32% of the particiapants conformed at least once. 75% of the participants conformed atleast once.
