Answer #1

Factors which influence rate of osmosis are :-

  1. Concentration gradient:-greater the difference between the concentration, faster the osmosis
  2. Mass of molecules diffusing:-higher the mass, slower is the rate of osmosis
  3. Temperature:-higher the temperature,-greater the rate of osmosis
  4. Solvent density:-as density increases, rate of diffusion decreases
  5. Solubility:-non polar molecules move more easily than polar molecules
  6. Surface area:-increased surface area increases the rate of osmosis
  7. Presence of light:-brighter light increases the rate of osmosis
  8. Distance travelled:-greater the distance travelled, slower the rate of osmosis

    2. (10 points) An aquarium has a 1000 L tank containing 400 L of salt water with a concentra- tion of 210 grams per liter. A salt water solution with a concentration of 470 grams per liter is pumped into the tank at a rate of 5 liters per minute. The well-mixed solution is drained from the tank at a rate of 3 liters per minute. Additionally, the tank is uncovered, so fresh water evaporates from the tank at a...

    1. Cholera is a disease that changes the tonicity (water/salt concentration) within the intestines and leads to excessive diarrhea and dehydration and often death in those affected by it. Based on your knowledge of osmosis and water movement, explain what you think the cholera bacteria does to the cells and digestive cavity of people that are infected. Secondly, explain whether you believe that large amount of water or large amounts of an electrolyte drink such as gatorade would be the...
