1 An experimental fish farm consists of a simple idealized food chain: algae, zooplankton, and fish (that eat only zooplankton). In this pond, the algae grow at a rate of 20 kg per square metre of pond surface per year.

a ) If you wanted to harvest only fish greater than 1 kg, give two examples of additional information that you would require.

  1. What are the components of forest structure? (2 marks)

  2. What is the role of each of the components? (5 marks)

  3. Give an example of how forest managers might manage one of these components. (3 marks)

Answer #1

ANSWER 1.A :-

When we consider the trophic system, there is a 10% decrease in the overall productivity as we go from the bottom to the top of food pyramid. So, accordingly, the growth of algae is 20 kg per square metre in an year. So, the growth of zooplanktons will show a decrease of 10% (20 × 10/100 = 2) and will be around 2 kg per square metre. Ultimately, the fish will show a growth of around ( (2 × 10/100 = 0.2) 0.2 kg per square metre per year.

The expected harvest of the fish should be 100 kg.

For 0.2 kg, the area requirement will be 1 m2

For 100 kg, the area requirement will be ' A '.

This corresponds to 'A' = 100 kg × 1 m2 / 0.2 kg = 1000 / 2 = 500 m2.

  1. The first requirement would be to know the decrease in the growth of the fish in accordance to the food pyramid.
  2. The second requirement would be the area needed to grow 100 kg of fish.

ANSWER 1.B :-

Taking into consideration the question mentioned above, there are two main components of the forest system namely the horizontal and the vertical component.

For both these things, the crown Height and crown (the total portion of the three present above the ground surface level) arrangement should be considered.

In case of Horizontal component, the arrangement is important in association with the other three crowns.

In case of vertical components, the Height of the trees should be considered as there are differences in the heights as in case of shrubs and trees.
