1.I said in class that histones are among the most highly-conserved proteins known, suggesting that almost any change in their sequences would be Very, Very Bad. In terms of mitosis and meiosis, why is maintaining histone function so important to the cell or organism?

Histones are highly alkaline proteins that are found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cell that packs the DNA into their structural units called nucleosomes. The DNA is wound around the histone proteins and form nucleosomes. They also play a role in the gene regulation. Without histones the DNA would be very long. They play a very important role in the condensation of chromatin in the mitosis otherwise the DNA would be very long and difficult to replicate
