In DNA replication, the DNA polymerase enzyme does not have to be until the end.

The complete process of DNA replication is described as below:-

As eukaryotic genome is very complex so DNA replication occurred in three stages:

1) Initiation

2) Elongation

3) Termination

During initiation, the DNA is made to be accessible to the proteins and enzymes involved in the replication process. Certain proteins bind to the origin of replication while helicase enzyme unwinds and opens up the DNA helix to forms Y-shaped structures called replication forks.

During elongation, DNA polymerase adds DNA nucleotides to the 3′ end of the template as DNA polymerase can only add new nucleotides at the end of a backbone so a primer sequence that provides this starting point is added.

So, the now during elongation, the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes pose a major problem in replication, as the DNA polymerase is unable to extend them without the use of primer. Therefore, Telomerase an enzyme that extends the ends by copying the RNA template and extending one end of the chromosome. Now, DNA polymerase can then extend the DNA using the primer. In this way, the ends of the chromosomes are protected and the problems associated with the complete replication of the strand are now solved and the DNA polymerase enzyme will work up to the complete ends.

During Termination, DNA polymerase enzyme falls off and replication is complete.
