What actions should the CEO of BFL ( a newly merged company) as leader and manager take to resolve post-merger problems which are occurring as a result of the implementation of the new organizational structure and strategy?
LEADING: MOBILIZING PEOPLE (Six months after a new merger, progress has been made but some team leaders are still resisting BFL’s ( the newly merged company) strategic approach, blocking communications and disrupting coordination, creating internal disagreements and conflict, and negative competition, especially for resources).
Answer
✓ members of the organisation do resist the changes, brought in the firm, due to mergers. Because, merging of two companies, can transform the entire structure, processes, administration, power, and designations. It becomes hard to manage diversed group of people, with different mind sets and to allocate resources equally. Members also fear that they will lose their power, if the structure changes, and try to create negative environment. This issue occurs when there is no proper change management is arranged. Conflicts can lead to the failure of the merger and can also influence on the strategic decisions.
To manage the change and keep the employees or members ready to embrace the transformation, the leaders and managers of BFL should have a proper planned change management, with calculated risks. They should have talented team, who can understand the importance of structural and process change, and can convey the same with other members. Employees need to be trained in the required areas, viz, languages, new methods, processes, systems, machines, etc. They must be involved in the process, and should be asked for valuable inputs.
Management needs to foster effective communication, by removing the barriers to reach to the higher authorities, and promote fairness and equity, with their support to help the members learn and be integrated with each other.
Make team work an important part of completing the tasks and associate rewards with it. This helps to ensure coordination and Mutual dependence. Provide flexibility, and empower the members for taking decisions with managerial approvals. And allocate resources equally to each department for eliminating conflicts.
