What is the importance of understanding the history of theater. Does it affect our ability to enjoy a performance? Does what has happened in the past influence what happens now? Should modern plays use elements of ancient theater?
In my opinion it is very important to know about the history of the theater. Just like when we study science or any other subject like social science we can better relate to that subject. When we study politics, the history of the country helps us relating better to the present scenarios, the history of theater also helps to relate better to the theater, it also provides a brief overview of the theater. After you have studied the history you can easily tell which project will benefit you which will not.
Yes, ofcourse it impacts our ability to enjoy the performance. Just imagine if you have to see a sequel to a movie would you prefer to watch its prequel first or you will see the second part without knowing history. Ofcourse, history will be required.
It depends upon situation to situation. It is often said that history repeats itself. But not always. And what has happened in the past sometimes can affect what is happening now.
The reason why people still watch theaters is because they want to feel connected to old ways of entertainment. To keep the essence of old entertainment alive bits of ancient theatre's elements shpuld be used in modern plays.
