3. You have discovered a biochemical pathway that leads to the zebra’s stripes!! With considerable effort, you have identified six zebra lines that don’t have stripes! They are completely dark. To figure out what’s happening, you do some crosses. When you cross zebra line 1 with lines 5 or 6, there are no stripes! When you cross zebra line 2 with lines 4 and 5, you get stripes again! When you cross zebra line 3 with line 6, you get stripes; but crossing zebra line 3 with 4 gives offspring with no stripes! (a) Draw a data table to illustrate these crosses, using (+) for stripes; (-) for no stripes; and (x) if it can’t be determined. (b) How many genes have you discovered? Interpret the data and diagram the possible arrangement of the suspected genes, assuming they are all on a single chromosome. (c) Show what the chromosomes would look like in the cross between zebra line 5 and zebra line 4. (d) Explain the concept here – why do some crosses give stripes and some do not?
