How to Survive the Eli Broad College of Business By Ashanti Golson on November 9, 2019 Getting into the business college is difficult, but staying and graduating from it is a whole different story. As a recent admit, the stress can get pretty intense. With the help of my mentor, Ms. Linda Diekman, giving me insightful advice on her experiences as an alumnus of the business college, I developed a couple of tips and tricks that will help every student survive the Eli Broad College of Business. Know all of fields of business. Business is the main economic engine for the country. All of the fields all work hand-in-hand, so the importance of knowing all of them is crucial. The fields that MSU offer are supply chain, marketing, accounting, finance, and even hospitality business. When you are a member of the business college, you must take all business-related classes but they may be outside of your field. Ms. Linda says, “Build a solid skillset on all types of business fields. You may have a focus in Marketing, but you still have to take accounting, economics, and business history. Just knowing all of the bits and pieces of business is very beneficial.” Choose your major wisely and take advantage of the opportunities it offers. One of the benefits of having a full image of the business world is knowing which field you easily fall into. When taking business classes, you gain a perspective on what you like and dislike about the many different concentrations. Having an idea on which field you want to go into will not only put you a step ahead, but it comes with opportunities all well. With the business skills learned from MKT 250, you’ll have the opportunity to gain experience in your desired field. This will make you a desirable candidate when looking for fulltime positions when graduation comes. Ms. Linda expresses, “I really had to make a conscious decision about what I wanted to do. I’m glad I made the choices that I made.” Be proactive in the classroom. The business college can be stressful and intimidating. One way to prevent falling behind and failing is to be proactive. Avoid distractions and fight against procrastination. You’ll not only meet deadlines, but you’ll know the material better if you prepare. Ms. Linda advises that “working ahead makes sure things run smoothly.” This advice will not only help you in the classroom, but this will prepare you for the workplace as well. In the real world, your boss will not always give you deadlines to complete projects and assignments. You’ll have to become adept at completing tasks immediately and efficiently. “The more proactive you can be, the less you’ll find yourself stumped or reacting to bad/difficult situations.”
This blog give a brief explanation on how difficult and stressful it is to study in a business college and also offers guidelines to overcome them. The writer of the blog had shared her own experience in the business school as she had developed some tips and tricks by understanding the advice that her mentor had offered her. She begins by stating how important business is and the various fields that are related to it. She states that it is not only important to study the main stream subject, but it is also necessary to understand other fields that are outside it because, it gives exposure and knowledge that will be beneficial in the future. She also adds the importance of choosing the major subject that a person likes and how essential it is to make good usage of the opportunities and experience that are available. The person must analyze themselves as what he or she likes and focus on their strengths. Understanding what one really wants and taking the correct decision in following the necessary steps will help in attaining the goals. She concludes her report by saying that being proactive, completing tasks on time and avoiding procrastination will help to overcome the tough situations easily.
The blog writer had written a good report as she had started her report by explaining the topic clearly and by addressing the audience (business school students) with the problems that they would commonly face and had offered the solutions to overcome it. She had included her own experiences, the advice from her mentor, and the tips developed by her which the audience will find relatable and useful to follow. She then procedurally explained the importance of the subject, the possible difficulties that would arise, the importance of choosing what a person wants to pursue, the necessity of learning information from related field, and the effective ways of staying proactive which will help to solve the problems beforehand.
