Since the two strands of DNA are complementary, transcription of a given gene can occur if either of the DNA strands is used as the template. This statement is false because only the template strand is used to form the RNA transcript. As a result, the RNA transcript is complimentary to template strand. The RNA polymerase reads the template strand from 3' to 5' direction. So, the complimentary RNA transcript is formed in the 5' to 3' direction. The RNA polymerase can only add nucleotides to the 3' end of the growing mRNA chain, therefore only the template strand is used to synthesize mRNA transcript.

The mRNA transcript resembles the other strand, known as the coding strand, except, the mRNA transcript has uracil instead of thymine.
