Macrophages are the cells of the immune system that serve to kill the pathogens and infected cells. The inflammatory response is one of the immune responses that is initiated upon entry of the pathogen into the body and includes swelling, redness, and fever. Macrophages are the cells that secrete cytokines and inhibit the inflammatory immune responses.
