Freud has been criticized because of his weak research methods and heavy emphasis on sex. One criticism of Erikson’s work is that it is too general to apply to real-world settings. Many people brand Freud as focusing more on sex while his research on the impact of childhood memories or repressed memories and the three levels of personality such as Id, ego and superego shed more lights on development. Children could be helped to understand the importance of expressing and sharing things that affect them at home and in school thus, overcoming them immediately rather than taking them for future. Personality stages wold help the children understand the importance of balancing their personality between Id and superego thus presenting a pleasant personality which is suitable at a social level.

Erikson’s stage of inferiority vs industrious would help the students understand the importance of becoming more active and build their capabilities in the midst of heavy competence. It would also help them understand that everyone is capable of achieving greater heights if they understand their abilities at a young age. Understanding the deficiencies that was caused by the previous stages and the future stages would help them prepare well.

Would these theories developed in the Western countries suit other cultures across the world?
