Our ancestors were isogamous, that only gamete size was produced. The question of the evolutionary origin of males and females is then synonymous to asking what evolutionary pressures caused gametes sized to diverge.

Isogamy is a reproductive system where all gametes are morphologically similar, especially in terms of size.
