In this journal article: Grubbs, R. H. Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2006, 45, 3760-3765 they studied isotopic substitution on a ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction using isotopic substitution using deuterium isotope of hydrogen. The scheme is shown below.

So, the answer is they used isotope of hydrogen i.e. deuterium. Here is some basic info about deuterium.

Deuterium, (D, or 2H), also called heavy hydrogen, isotope of hydrogen with a nucleus consisting of one proton and one neutron, which is double the mass of the nucleus of ordinary hydrogen (one proton). Deuterium has an atomic weight of 2.014. It is a stable atomic species found in natural hydrogen compounds to the extent of about 0.0156 percent.
