There is a significant difference between strange or unusual behaviour and abnormal behaviour. The type of behaviour which is out of the ordinary or we can say that is somewhat unusual, that doesn't align with the characteristics of a regular behaviour can be termed as strange or unusual behaviour. Whereas abnormal behaviour simply means away or deviated from the normal behaviour i.e the behaviour is considered dysfunctional. We can only term an unusual behaviour abnormal if the behaviour is undesirable, threatening to others or creates impairment in an individual's life functions.

Unusual behaviour definitely seems out of ordinary but they are not long term, threatening or doesn't cause impairment in the living standard of the person like abnormal behaviour, it affects individual's daily routine vastly which in the long leaves the individual crippled to function.

Characteristics of unusual behaviour:

  • It is the behaviour which is somewhat different from regular behaviour. Like, after losing a game one might feel, sad and agitated which is usual behaviour.
  • Most often it is temporary and short-lived. Like when some get upset at something most probably the anger is shortlived. It's often momentary.
  • It doesn't impact greatly on the mentality of the person, the flow of thoughts remain unchanged.
  • It is not threatening for others or oneself or doesn't cause vast impairment.
  • Often it is cured on its own and person comes back to normal.

Characteristics of abnormal behaviour:

  • Person's memory, cognitive abilities and thought process shows change
  • It is long term and needs treatment to cure or control.
  • It might be threatening to others or oneself.
  • It causes impairment in daily functioning of the person.
  • The person feels helpless.
  • The person often seems worried, anxious and disturbed.
  • It can also cause permanent impairment in one's living.
  • It cannot be treated without seeking professional help.

Above characteristics clearly describes the difference between unusual and abnormal behaviour.
