Fossils
Scientists know much about the earths history. They estimate that
plants and animals lived as long as 3.5 billion years ago. Some
modern animals relatives lived 580 million years ago. Dinosaurs
lived about 200 million years ago. The first humans came along
about 3.7 million years ago. How do scientists know all this? They
find clues in the earth’s rocks. Rocks often contain fossils, the
preserved remains’ of things that lived long ago.
Most fossils are the hard parts of living things. Animal bones,
teeth, and shells may be fossils. Fossils' of plant parts are rare.
Plants dont have hard parts. But plant imprints and animal tracks'
in hardened mud are also fossils. Sometimes fossils are whole
animals. For example, whole woolly mammoths have been found.
Sometimes a dead animals body decayed after it became trapped as
glaciers of ice moved across the earth. Thats why fossils of ocean
plants and animals can be found on land.
