Chapter Three-Situation Management You have just read your chapter on the manager as a person. Read the situation below and respond to how and why you would react to the following situation. Use chapter material in your response. This is a hypothetical situation but it requires your attention. Please be descriptive in your responses. Barb Jones has been rumored to be sleeping with the Department Manager of Finance-Ted Wills. Barb is married and has three children, Ted, William, and Susie. Ted is not married but has been divorced once before. Barb is the administrative assistant for Sam Waterston, the president of the company. Barb’s husband is named Marty. Last week, Barb and Ted had an argument in the cafeteria where Barb called Ted an illegitimate and Ted grabbed Barb by the arm. Barb left work that day crying. Performance in the finance department is down and the workers there are attributing this to the relationship between Barb and Ted. No evidence supports this however. Nancy from shipping has told you that Barb and Ted may get married and Barb is pregnant with his child. How will you as a manager/person approach this situation and not violate individual/employment rights of your subordinates?

Answer #1

I would use the fight between Barb and Ted in the cafeteria as an excuse to talk to them privately and individually. I would ask them to share something which they might feel is important to the work environment

I am sure they would provide me with enough details which would shed a light on their relationship. This would help me in choosing the next steps needed to perform. For example, if they accept their relationship, I would urge them to keep their matters away from their professional work as it is hindering the work of others.

If they deny the relationship, I would ask them to sort out whatever confusion or issues they have with each other and ask them to maintain a cordial and friendly environment in the office.

I am sure this approach would solve the problem for the employees of the company as well as me.
